4 Kinds of Water Filters

There are several different kinds of water filters to choose from depending on your goals and their function. When the budget allows, home owners can install a whole house system and this is referred to as point-of-entry (POE) filtration. This first option treats all water that enters the home for drinking, cooking, and bathing. These systems are more expensive so the second, more common option is called a point-of-use (POU) filter. A POU system is one that connects to your kitchen faucet or sits next to the sink and filters the water for drinking and cooking in real time. The third option is a water pitcher that filters water similar to other models and can be stored in the fridge. And the final water filter choice is a water bottle with built in filtration.

Not all filters are not created equal so it’s important to explore the different contaminants each filter can remove, and choose based on your health goals. Nontoxic living is not about perfection so any filtration is better than none, and these habits will start to become seamless in your day-to-day life.

What Toxicants Do Water Filters Remove

Regardless of whether you choose a POE or POU system, you can prioritize removing toxicants that do the most harm. There are 4 main contaminants you want to remove from your water when possible:

  • Fluoride: higher amounts of fluoride have been shown to contribute to bone damage and other poor health effects.

  • Heavy Metals: lead & arsenic are known to cause many health effects including cardiovascular and developmental damage.

  • PFAS: these synthetic chemicals cause damage the liver, immune system, and reproductive health.

  • Phthalates: known to negatively impact hormones, fertility, and even diabetes.

Our Favorite Water Filters

To remove the toxicants listed above it’s best to choose either a vetted water pitcher or a reverse osmosis system (RO). Here are our fav’s:
